Like many others I've always been facinated with the "what-if" posssibility of a German invasion of Britain. Of course post-war analysis of the German plans almost unanimously say that the Germans did the right thing when they decided not to go ahead with "See Löwe" (The German codeword for the invasion). Some years ago in connection with creating a WWII boardgame I worked out a set of assumptions that would have given the Germans the possibility of invading Britain in 1940, i.e historical events that would have been necessary for an invasion to be feasible: Assumption 1: A cross channel invasion of Britain was a part of the original planning for Case Yellow (Fall Gelb - The invasion of France and the low countries), and thus plans and resources were allocated as early as October 1939. Assumption 2: The air offensive against Britain commenced almost immediately after the fall of France in June 1940 and was sustained throughout the months of August and September forcing RAF to re-deploy it's assets to the eastern parts of Britain. This gave the German airforce air superiority over the English channel and south-east Britain. Assumption 3: Air-superiority gave the German airforce (especially the dive-bombers) a free run at all allied shipping in the channel, military and civilian. Thus the invasion "Corridors" could be protected from interference by the British navy. Assumption 4: The weather permitted a crossing at the most favorable time in September (as regards to moon and tides). With these assumptions in place one can construct an invasion either following the various proposed plans or make up one's own. The Order of Battle I've used an excellent compilation done by Shawn at the Axis history forum when creating the Axis forces in my Sealion operation and battles. With his kind permission I can now publish it here. (Adobe PDF-file)
The Byte-Sealion project What I've done is to put together a bunch of mods by some of the most talented modders out there, sometimes I've had to do a bit of fiddling with them (usually a bit of renumbering) and on occasion a little changing (adding armlets to the Homeguard for example). All this to create units and terrain that suggest the south of England rather than late-war Italy. I've then made a set of Byte Battles to match this setting. This is the download section for the Byte Sealion project. Mods, links and scenarios can be found there.
